Information About Acne Treatment Worcester

By Kristen Baird

Most of the treatment for acne works by reducing quantity of oil that is produced, inflammation of the skin, speeding up turnover of skin cells or fighting infection by bacteria. For most drugs that are used, one should not expect to see positive outcome for the first about eight weeks. The condition may actually worsen before getting better. In considering acne treatment Worcester residents have various forms of treatment. Full treatment could be realized after as much as several years.

Whatever drug is chosen for an individual depends on how severe the condition is and type of acne one is suffering from. Various topical medications are applied on the skin and others taken orally. In most of the cases, these medications are taken in combination. Pregnant women are not supposed to use oral prescriptions for acne treatment. These medications are taken when the skin is dry and clean, preferably 15 minutes after the skin is washed.

Some side effects will be experienced, notably skin irritation, redness, peeling and dryness. The doctor will recommend certain steps to reduce the side effects. These include switching to other medications, increasing medications gradually or washing off the medication after some time. An example of topical medication is antibiotics. These function by killing any excess bacteria in the skin and minimizing any redness.

Some oral antibiotics are used for either severe or moderate acne. In addition to minimizing bacteria, they fight inflammation. The moment there is improvement in the symptoms or the medications prescribed are not working, tapering off of the medications is recommended. Tapering is useful in preventing resistance of antibiotics which occurs when they are used for treatment over a long time.

In most cases, oral medications are used together with topical medications. Oral antibiotic use will come with certain side effects, the most common being stomach upsets and dizziness. The sensitivity of the skin to the sun is also increased. Besides, teeth discoloration and reduced bone growth in kids will also be possible effects. In some cases, therapies are used, either alone or in combination.

There is the use of light based therapy that has a lot of success in treating acne. It works by targeting bacteria which cause inflammation. Some forms of therapy are done from home and others at the office of the doctor. One form of such therapy, blue light therapy, is done from home using a hand held device. Pain, temporary redness and light sensitivity are some side effects.

There is chemical peel which uses repeated application of chemical solution like salicylic acid. Treatment through chemical peeling is best effective if used in combination with other treatment forms. This therapy is not for people taking oral retinoids. There will be side effects.

Dermatologists could use some special tools for removal of blackheads and whiteheads gently. These are those that may not have been cleared by topical medications. One may experience scarring but such scars can be handled in various ways.
