A Guide To Choosing Arizona Chili Spices

By Amanda Baird

There are numerous aspects to developing a good chili recipe. It is very versatile and people often develop their own recipes for meat, chicken or served with vegetables and kidney beans if they are vegetarian. However one of the key priorities is to ensure you get the right blend of Arizona chili spices in order to get a good balance between heat and flavour.

When people see the word spice it is often associated with heat. This is not always strictly true. A spice can equally be used to change the flavouring in a subtle way. You do not necessarily need to be someone who wants to have their mouth burned off in order to enjoy this food!

One thing that often puts people off cooking this is heat. However peppers do not necessarily have to burn the mouth. A spice mix can also include ingredients such as tumeric or paprika in order to add an extra bit of colour in order to make the dish stand out. This is equally the case with bell peppers or sliced in jalapenos.

In terms of heat the difference will tend to be in the peppers you use. Sweet bell peppers are the mildest. These are ideal for people who want a hint of spice but do not want it to be overpowering. If you want a flavour that is a bit sweeter you may also want to add a banana pepper to the mix. Another common addition is paprika. As well as providing a distinct flavour it is also often used to add a distinct colour

The most popular form of pepper is jalapeno. As well as being an addition to a chili these are often served stuffed with cream cheese. Slicing these green peppers and adding to the mix will add a good extra hit of heat without being excessively hot. The birds eye is also a good example of one that can be added to provide additional kick.

As a broad guide the larger peppers tend to be the mildest and the smallest tend to be hotter. There are also varieties that are geared toward specific tastes such as bell peppers or banana peppers both ideal for giving you a sweeter taste. One of the most well known is jalapeno.

There are numerous recipes available online, each recommending a different mixture of spices. Whether you are making one that is very hot or mild you always need to consider the flavour of what you are adding. This is something you can learn over the course of your cooking.

After you have used a recipe and begin to become more confident you can develop your own blend of Arizona chili spices. Thankfully if you store them carefully you can access these flavourings at a later date. Look online for recipes and suggestions for spices to create your own recipe.
