If you happen to be similar to me, then you most likely grew up preparing and eating dinner made from a pan or frying pan sprayed with teflon. Today almost every pan is made this way. The pans are lined with teflon to keep food from sticking to the surface. You should be extremely cautious with teflon coated pans, and you can't use steel utensils on teflon coated pans or the pans will get scratched. I am quite sure you completely know what I'm speaking of.
Although this hasn't been consistently how pans were. People in the past cooked in pans made from cast iron. Teflon didn't exist at that time, and people needed something strong that would last for quite awhile. Men and women had to have something that was created one time, and put to use for anything. And for a lot of reasons, cast iron was the preferred choice.
Cast iron pans were super dependable and could hold up to nearly anything, from heat to extreme cold, or even being knocked on the pavement. Before modern technology people used these types of pans. These pans survived 40 years or more and were passed down from generations.
Still at some point along the way, we lost our affection for pans made out of cast iron. A type of pan a lot more convenient came along and we forgot about the tried and true cast iron pan. Nowadays most people make use of low price pots that are not built with quality, that can be easily washed. That's because cast iron takes a little bit of work. Although if you put in that extra extra effort, the rewards are really worth it.
This doesn't mean that everyone has stopped using these pans completely. I personally cook with a cast iron skillet all the time, and these types of pans are actually beginning to stage a huge revival. And that's because we have started to experience the value.
Allow me to explain several of the attributes that help to make cooking with cast iron sweet:
First, foods cooked in a cast iron pan really taste amazing. The food can really taste a lot more tasty than the meals that you cook in a normal pan made from teflon. The reason pertains to what is referred to as the 'seasoning'. The seasoning comes from not ever applying detergent to the surface of the pan, and locking in the tastes that are created from food cooked in the pan. The flavors remain locked up inside the pan, and after awhile start to create deep, full bodied tastes in the food you cook.
The second thing is, pans that are made out of cast iron are automatically non stick if you care for the pans as you should. They don't need to have teflon surfaces or any other artificial thing to prevent food from getting stuck. This is if right after each time you use it, you line your pan with a very thin coating of grease. This grease helps seal in the 'seasoning' and establish a great non stick surface. In time, the non stick surface remains permanent.
Lastly, you can cook almost anything with pans made out of cast iron. You are able to saute vegetables on the stove top, grill meat, or even place these pans in the stove. These pans are very versatile. Quite often I simply keep my pan made from cast iron directly on top of the stove in order to use the pan at anytime I need to.
So like I said, using pans made from cast iron has many positives. I did not really address all of them in this article. Yet if you could be thinking about acquiring one, I totally think you should. These are a great addition and will totally complement your cooking. Besides, cast iron pans will last forever. Hopefully a ton more people will begin cooking with cast iron pans like people happened to do in the old days.
