While I sit here with a clementine at my desk, I have to think about where I would be if these kinds of foods weren't in my diet. I don't want to claim that I am a health guru of sorts because then I'd be lying to those who are reading now. Yes, I enjoy my fruits and vegetables very much but that's because I simply enjoy healthy food more from a stance of taste than anything else. I just wish that I held that belief strong when I first entered college.
If I had to say one thing about college that I could not about high school, it was that I absolutely loved the sense of independence back then. In high school, it seemed like every second I was being told what to do by those who claimed to know more than me. I was lectured on the best meals to eat and how to care for myself on the whole. I wish that I had known back then that these people were wise on the issue because then perhaps I would have looked after myself better.
When I started college, I am not terribly ashamed to admit that I had splurged on treats more often than any one person should. If you ask me, a soda bottle should be consumed every now and then; it's not something that stands to be used daily. This was the case for me and I enjoyed more than a few candy bars as well. It seemed like my body had taught me well because after following this regimen for a few weeks, I became sickly. I knew that's when I had to make a diet change.
I slowly started to learn that healthy food could be just as satisfying for a body in terms of enjoyment as all of that junk food could be. The nutrition was slowly entering my body again and for every bottle of soda I would have taken I ended up swapping each for a bottle of water. Caffeine could have been easily classified as a drug, judging by the difficulty I had curbing that addiction of sorts. Also, I had to make note of companies such as Quorn which were able to craft recipes which incorporate both taste and essential nutrients.
Currently, I think I have the best control over my diet that I have ever thought possible. Soda has become a distant memory and unless for dessert on certain nights, cookies and cakes aren't consumed much. I think I made a good upgrade from then till now and altering my diet was perhaps the best move that I could have made. That very change allowed me the chance to lead a healthier, and hopefully longer, life.
